®On January 19, 2021, the AMA announced two new CPT codes for reporting the Janssen Pharmaceutica (a division of Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 vaccine, which is a single dose vaccination. Of course, just as with the other COVID-19 vaccines, they must be given FDA approval for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to be administered before the codes can be reported.
As is normal with injectable vaccines, in order to report the service accurately, two codes are required to describe the:
- vaccine itself, and
- vaccine administration (the physical act of injecting the vaccine)
Reporting COVID-19 vaccine administration is, however, different in that there is a specifically paired administration code whose description matches the type of vaccine being administered. Do not mix and match these but be sure to pair them properly. The new Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 vaccine code is:
- 91303: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, DNA, spike protein, adenovirus type 26 [Ad26) vector, preservative free, 5x1010 viral particles/0.5mL dosage, for intramuscular use
and the vaccine administration code is:
- 0031A: Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, DNA, spike protein, adenovirus type 26 (Ad26) vector, preservative free, 5x1010 viral particles/0.5mL dosage, single dose
