These two codes are not interchangeable. Code 97140 is for manual therapy techniques which do not require active participation of the patient (e.g., soft tissue mobilization, manual lymphatic drainage, manual traction). Code 97530 describes dynamic activities which require patient participation (e.g., throwing, lifting).
