In February, 2014, CMS announced the "pausing" of the RAC (Recovery Audit Contractors) program to allow current RAC contractors to complete remaining claim audits and related duties before CMS begins the process of reviewing RAC program contracts as well as allowing time for CMS to make improvements in the RAC program itself. The purpose of this was to allow current contractors to complete remaining claim audits and related duties before CMS begins the process of reviewing RAC program contracts as well as allowing time for CMS to make improvements in the RAC program itself.
In August, 2014, CMS announced contract modifications and has allowed reviews to restart on a limited basis. This announcement applied to all four of the RAC regions. Once RAC regions are permitted to resume full speed ahead, it should logically be expected to see a significant increase in RAC audits across the country.
