This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) surveillance for healthcare personnel vaccinations. The NHSN defines a (northern hemisphere) influenza season year as being from July 1 of the index year to June 30 of the following year and reports the season in years (for example, 2016-2017).
