A recent program memorandum (PM), Transmittal AB-02-161, issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provided information regarding coverage and billing requirements for the use of electrical stimulation for the treatment of wounds. Medicare will cover electrical stimulation for the treatment of chronic Stage III or Stage IV pressure ulcers, arterial ulcers, diabetic ulcers, and venous stasis ulcers, for services performed on or after April 1, 2003.
