On Aug. 4, 2022, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services declared the increased spread of the monkeypox virus in the United States a Public Health Emergency (PHE). Monkeypox is an orthopoxvirus, which is a member of the Poxiviridae family of viruses, the same family of viruses responsible for smallpox and cowpox.
