Article Overview

This article covers acute supraglottitis from a clinical and coding perspective. It describes the condition, typical symptoms, common infectious causes, and the ICD-9-CM code changes introduced effective October 1, 2001. It is relevant to coding professionals and clinicians who need to understand the diagnosis classification discussed in the article.

Why This Topic Matters

Acute supraglottitis can involve airway compromise, and the article also highlights how the diagnosis was categorized in ICD-9-CM after a code update. That makes it useful for anyone reviewing historical coding references or distinguishing the diagnosis in documentation and claims workflows.

Article Sections

  1. Clinical overview

Summarizes the condition, its anatomic scope, common symptoms, potential severity, affected age groups, and typical infectious causes.

  2. ICD-9-CM code update

Notes the effective date of the coding change and the addition of diagnosis categories related to this condition.

  3. Coding example

Presents a brief application scenario involving the diagnosis and the associated coding response.
