The following advice supercedes that provided in Coding Clinic, First Quarter 1996, pages 8-9, and March-April 1985, pages 10-11. Many hospitals have contacted the Cooperating Parties for ICD-9-CM requesting clarification and simplification of the instructions provided for coding patients who receive outpatient surgery and then are subsequently admitted as inpatients to the same hospital for continuing care.
