AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2003 Fourth Quarter; VOLUMES 1 & 2 NEW/REVISED CODES
Aldosteronism
Effective October 1, 2003, code 255.1, Hyperaldosteronism, has been expanded to separately identify primary aldosteronism (255.10), glucocorticoid- remediable aldosteronism (255.11), Conn's syndrome (255.12), Bartter's syndrome (255.13) and other secondary aldosteronism (255.14). Code 255.1 included several different states of aldosterone excess that required different diagnostic work-up and different treatment. The new codes will now allow differentiation between these different conditions. 255 Disorders of adrenal glands 255.1 Hyperaldosteronism Delete Aldosteronism (primary) (secondary) Bartter's syndrome Conn's syndrome New code 255.10 Primary aldosteronism Aldosteronism NOS Hyperaldosteronism, unspecified New code 255.11 Glucocorticoid-remediable aldosteronism Familial...

Article Overview
This article reviews an ICD-9-CM coding update effective October 1, 2003, for aldosteronism/hyperaldosteronism within disorders of the adrenal glands. It explains the background of the condition family, the reasons the former broad category was divided into more specific diagnoses, and the clinical distinctions discussed in the article. It is useful for coding professionals, CDI staff, and clinicians who need to understand how the adrenal-related terminology is organized in the source material.
Why This Topic Matters
Accurate classification of adrenal-gland disorders affects diagnosis reporting, terminology alignment, and downstream data quality. The article helps readers understand a coding revision that separated a previously broad diagnosis category into more specific entities.
Article Sections
-
ICD-9-CM update effective October 1, 2003
Introduces the coding revision for adrenal-gland disorders and summarizes the scope of the change. The section frames the terminology update and the affected diagnosis family.
-
Background on hyperaldosteronism
Provides general clinical background on aldosterone excess and associated symptoms. The section also describes broad causes and the overall condition category.
-
Primary aldosteronism
Discusses one major subtype of aldosterone excess and its general clinical context. The section outlines broad etiologic considerations and epidemiology.
-
Glucocorticoid-remediable aldosteronism
Covers a hereditary subtype of primary aldosteronism and its general endocrine relationship. The section addresses broad genetic and treatment-related background.
-
Conn's syndrome
Describes another primary form of aldosteronism and its general laboratory context. The section explains how this subtype is characterized at a high level.
-
Bartter's syndrome
Reviews a secondary form of aldosterone excess and its general clinical associations. The section includes broad inheritance and physiologic context.
-
Secondary aldosteronism
Summarizes secondary causes of aldosterone overproduction outside the adrenal gland. The section lists broad categories of associated conditions and triggers.
