Anaphylactic Reaction
A five-year-old with a known allergy to tree nuts presented to the emergency department with wheezing and urticaria. The patient was diagnosed with an anaphylactic reaction secondary to eating cookies containing walnuts, which was successfully treated. Please clarify the correct code assignment for a patient that has experienced an anaphylactic reaction but does not go into shock. We have been told that codes for anaphylaxis (995.0 and 995.6x) should only be used when the patient experiences anaphylactic shock. Is this correct?
