Aortic Valve and Aortic Root Replacement with Aortic Valve Conduit
A patient with aortic valve stenosis and aortic root aneurysm underwent a tissue composite root replacement via modified Bentall with Konect Resilia™ aortic valve conduit. The aortic root conduit is a Gelweave Valsalva graft made of polyester. The aortic valve is made of bovine pericardial tissue (Resilia™) and is pre-mounted inside the Gelweave conduit. During the procedure, the bicuspid valve was removed in its entirety via redo sternotomy. The tissue valve conduit was secured with sutures. After creating button sites in the graft, both button anastomoses were completed with suture. The graft was beveled, and a distal anastomosis was completed with sutures. The aortic valve was functioning properly, hemostasis was achieved, and thymic tissues were reapproximated over the neo ascending aorta and innominate vein. When the aortic valve and aortic root are both replaced with an aortic valve conduit, is the Replacement code assigned once with the body part value “aortic valve,” or is the aortic root considered part of the ascending aorta, requiring a separate code for Replacement of the ascending aorta? ...

Article Overview
This article addresses a cardiac surgery coding question involving a combined aortic valve and aortic root replacement using an aortic valve conduit in a redo sternotomy setting. It is aimed at coders and revenue cycle professionals who need to understand how the procedure is approached in a procedure coding framework and how the anatomy and operative components are represented in coding discussion.
Why This Topic Matters
Combined valve-and-root procedures can be complex to classify accurately in procedural coding, especially when a conduit device is used and multiple anatomic components are addressed in one operation. Understanding the article helps readers determine whether the case falls within a broader replacement coding discussion for cardiovascular surgery.
What You Will Learn
- How a combined aortic valve and aortic root replacement case is framed for coding review
- How conduit-based cardiac surgery cases are described in procedural documentation
- What types of coding questions arise when multiple cardiac structures are replaced in one operation
- How redo sternotomy and related operative details may appear in the coding context
Who Should Read This
- Medical coders
- Cardiac surgery coders
