Application of External Fixator Device

Effective October 1, 2005, new adjunct codes have been created for the application of external fixator devices. Prior to this change, it was not possible to distinguish between the different types of external fixator devices available, such as monoplanar (84.71), ring system (84.72) or hybrid—using both ring and monoplanar systems (84.73). Article Overview

This article covers updates to coding for external fixator device application, including the addition of adjunct codes that distinguish device system types and the related procedure coding context. It is relevant to coders working with fracture care, orthopedic procedure reporting, and code-set updates tied to external fixation devices.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate reporting of external fixation procedures depends on recognizing the procedure, the fixation site, and the device category being documented. This article helps coding professionals understand the scope of the update and where these codes fit within related procedure coding.

Article Sections

  1. Effective date and background

Introduces the coding update and explains why the new adjunct codes were created. It also places the update in the context of prior external fixation reporting.

  2. External fixator device types and use

Describes the broad categories of external fixation devices and summarizes general ways they are used in treatment. It also notes the kinds of conditions and orthopedic situations associated with external fixation.

  3. Code revisions and new adjunct codes

Outlines the revised code structure and the new adjunct code category for external fixator devices. It also identifies how the article organizes the related procedure framework.

  4. Clinical example

Presents an example scenario involving fracture care and external fixation and shows how the coding update is applied in that context.
