Asphyxia and Hypoxemia
Effective October 1, 2005, code 799.0 Asphyxia, has been expanded to separately identify asphyxia (799.01) and hypoxemia (799.02). Asphyxia is a condition of severely deficient supply of oxygen to the body. Hypoxemia is deficient oxygenation of the blood. Low oxygen levels can be present without asphyxiation. New codes have been created to differentiate between these two conditions.
