Asthma with Status Asthmaticus

Asthma is bronchial hypersensitivity characterized by a combination of mucosal edema, constriction of bronchial musculature, and excessive secretion of viscid edema (that may cause mucous plugs). Hyperactivity of the bronchial musculature due to various stimuli (exposure to allergens or responses to infection, irritating inhalants, cold air, exercise, or emotional upsets) causes widespread narrowing of the airways, which varies over time. Manifestations of asthma are wheezing, dyspnea out of proportion to exertion, and cough, and are usually reversible by use of drugs.
