Atheroembolism

Effective October 1, 2002, unique codes have been created to uniquely report atheroembolism separate and distinct from atherosclerosis, thrombosis or embolism. Atheroembolism is a distinct entity. Thrombosis and embolism involve true clots (category 444), while atheroembolism is degenerative material from plaques. Atheroemboli may be demonstrated by identification of cholesterol crystals in biopsy from kidney, skin or muscle. The cholesterol embolizes from atheromatous plaques, usually in the aorta. Fragments of atheromatous material from larger arterial vessels (like the aorta or renal artery) embolize to small arteries, arterioles and glomeruli. Atheroembolism tends to occur in elderly patients with preexisting atherosclerotic arterial...

Article Overview

This article covers an ICD-9-CM update that distinguishes atheroembolism from other vascular conditions and organizes reporting by affected site. It is aimed at coders, CDI specialists, and clinical documentation teams who need to understand the scope of the condition, the affected body areas, and the related coding framework discussed in the source. The article also notes a kidney-failure-related coding reference and a later note about a kidney disease code title and expansion.

Why This Topic Matters

Atheroembolism was separated into its own reporting category, so accurate indexing depends on recognizing the condition’s relationship to vascular disease and the body site involved. This matters for precise diagnosis coding, especially when kidney involvement or other associated conditions are documented.

What You Will Learn

  • How atheroembolism is distinguished from other vascular conditions in the coding framework
  • Which body-site groupings are discussed for reporting the condition
  • What related kidney-failure coding reference is noted in the article
  • What update note is included about a kidney disease code title and expansion
