Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant

Note: As of October 1, 2000, changes have been made to the bone marrow transplant and hematopoietic stem cell transplant codes. Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant may be accomplished by using hematopoietic stem cells obtained from either bone marrow or peripheral blood. Stem cell transplant may be performed on patients with breast cancer, Hodgkin's disease, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, or neuroblastoma (in children) where standard therapy would not cure these patients. The bone marrow is the source of all blood cells and platelets. The bone marrow produces an immature, undifferentiated cell called a stem cell. This cell is not...

Article Overview

This Find-A-Code article explains the clinical process and coding context for autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant, with historical ICD-9-CM references, transplant-related harvesting/apheresis references, and a separate note about postoperative fever coding considerations. It is intended for coding professionals and others who need to understand how the topic is discussed in the ICD-9-CM era and what related guidance is included in the article.

Why This Topic Matters

The page helps readers determine whether they need the full premium discussion of transplant-related coding references and the accompanying postoperative fever note. It is useful for coders, auditors, and documentation specialists working with older ICD-9-CM guidance or reviewing transplant-related records.

Article Sections

  1. Background and clinical process

Introduces the transplant topic and describes the broad clinical context for autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant. It also notes the general types of patients and treatment sequence discussed in the article.

  2. Coding references and examples

Summarizes the historical coding references associated with the transplant topic and presents example scenarios tied to the article’s coding discussion. The section focuses on the coding context and related reference changes.

  3. Postoperative fever question and note

Addresses a separate question about postoperative fever classification and includes an additional note about a later ICD-9-CM subcategory change. It discusses the article’s guidance context without presenting detailed decision logic.
