Autonomic Dysreflexia

Prior to October 1, 1998, a specific code for autonomic dysreflexia was not available and therefore this syndrome was reported by assigning a code for each manifestation or symptom attributed to it. A new code has been created to report autonomic dysreflexia to more accurately identify this syndrome. Article Overview

This article covers autonomic dysreflexia as a clinical syndrome in people with spinal cord injury and explains why a dedicated diagnosis code was introduced to improve reporting. It is relevant to coders, CDI teams, clinicians, and compliance staff who need to understand the condition, its historical coding context, and the general type of documentation issues associated with it.

Why This Topic Matters

Autonomic dysreflexia is a potentially serious complication of spinal cord injury, and accurate coding depends on recognizing its distinctive clinical context and the transition from symptom-based reporting to a dedicated diagnosis code.

What You Will Learn

  • How autonomic dysreflexia is described clinically
  • Why a dedicated diagnosis code became necessary
  • The historical reporting approach used before the code existed
  • Common signs and symptoms associated with the syndrome
  • The spinal cord injury context in which the condition is discussed
