Bronchospasm
Effective October 1, 2006, code 519.11, Acute bronchospasm, was created to uniquely identify acute bronchospasm in a patient who has not been diagnosed with asthma and does not meet the accepted criteria for bronchitis. Bronchospasm is a contraction of the muscles in the walls of the bronchioles that causes an airway restriction. Article Overview
This article covers a coding-focused review of bronchospasm, including a 2006 ICD-9-CM update and related respiratory system classifications. It is relevant for coders, clinical documentation teams, and revenue cycle staff who need to understand how bronchospasm is organized within the respiratory chapter and how related conditions are cross-referenced in the article. The discussion is centered on classification structure, inclusion and exclusion references, and the broader respiratory disease context.
Why This Topic Matters
Accurate respiratory coding depends on recognizing where bronchospasm fits within the classification system and how related diagnoses are grouped. This article helps readers orient to the relevant ICD-9-CM section and understand the scope of the update without needing to infer from clinical language alone.
