Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillator
Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillators (CRT-Ds) are designed to treat dysfunctional ventricular contractions and ventricular tachyarrythmias, common in patients with heart failure. The following paragraphs highlight some of the important procedural and therapeutic differences between conventional automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillators (AICDs) and CRT-Ds. Note: For more information on CRT, see Coding Clinic, Fourth Quarter 2002 pgs. 95-101. Article Overview
This article covers cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator implantation in the context of heart failure care and compares it with conventional automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator procedures. It is relevant to inpatient and facility coders, coding educators, and cardiovascular documentation reviewers who need to understand how the procedure is discussed in coding guidance. The article also points to Coding Clinic material and describes the general procedural setup, device components, and related implantation concepts.
Why This Topic Matters
CRT-D procedures involve specialized cardiac device implantation that may be documented differently from conventional defibrillator procedures. Understanding the scope of the article helps coders and reviewers identify when the material applies to device implantation cases and related coding references.
Article Sections
-
Overview of CRT-Ds and comparison with AICDs
Introduces the device type and frames the discussion around differences between resynchronization therapy defibrillators and conventional implantable defibrillators.
