Cardiac Tamponade

Effective October 1, 2007, a new code has been created to identify cardiac tamponade (423.3). Cardiac tamponade is due to fluid accumulating in the pericardium resulting in increased pressure on the heart. This increased pressure causes a decrease in diastolic filling of the ventricles, which causes a decrease in cardiac output. Symptoms can be similar to heart failure or cardiogenic shock, with tachycardia, dyspnea, and orthopnea. Cardiac tamponade can be caused by a progressive effusion, which may be due to infection, neoplasm, or follow cardiac surgery. It may also be caused by rupture of the heart, aortic dissection...

Article Overview

This article covers the clinical concept of cardiac tamponade, including general causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment, along with a coding update tied to an effective date and diagnosis classification context. It is useful for coders, CDI staff, auditors, and clinical documentation professionals who need to understand how the topic is presented in coding references and how it relates to ICD-9-CM diagnosis reporting.

Why This Topic Matters

Cardiac tamponade can appear in documentation alongside several underlying conditions, so understanding the article helps readers recognize the topic in a coding context and identify the coding framework referenced by the source.

Article Sections

  1. Clinical Overview

Summarizes the condition, its general physiologic effect, common symptoms, possible causes, and typical diagnostic and treatment approaches.

  2. Coding Update and Diagnosis Context

Presents the coding update, the diagnosis classification context, and the relationship to the underlying cause within the referenced diagnosis system.

  3. Coding Question and Answer

Includes a sample coding question and the corresponding diagnosis sequencing response within the article's coding framework.
