Carotid Sinus Syndrome
Effective October 1, 2008, code 337.0, Idiopathic peripheral autonomic neuropathy, has been expanded to separately identify carotid sinus syndrome (337.01). Carotid sinus syndrome is a vagal activation which is similar to physiologic manifestations in patients seen with neurocardiogenic syncope. It is also called carotid sinus hypersensitivity. It is caused by pressure on the carotid sinus baroreceptors. It usually occurs with turning of the head to one side. Activation of the carotid sinus baroreceptors gives rise to impulses carried via a branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve, to the medulla oblongata. The impulses activate the sympathetic nerve fibers to...

Article Overview
This article covers a diagnosis code update tied to carotid sinus syndrome within the autonomic nervous system chapter and includes a brief coding scenario involving a patient with syncope who underwent dual-chamber pacemaker implantation. It is relevant to coders, CDI staff, and reimbursement teams reviewing diagnosis assignment changes, procedure coding, and related classification updates.
Why This Topic Matters
It helps readers understand how a specific diagnosis was separated into its own code and how that diagnosis appears in a procedural coding scenario. The article is useful for accurate record abstraction, claim preparation, and code-set awareness around neurologic and cardiovascular-related encounters.
Article Sections
-
ICD code update for autonomic nervous system disorders
Summarizes a diagnosis classification change effective in 2008 and the related structure of the autonomic nervous system code group. The section highlights the addition of a distinct diagnosis category and related deletions within the code family.
-
Clinical background on carotid sinus syndrome
Provides a general medical overview of carotid sinus syndrome, including its relation to syncope and autonomic response. The discussion explains the condition in broad physiologic terms without focusing on coding decisions.
-
Case example: diagnosis and procedure assignment
Presents a short patient scenario involving carotid sinus syndrome and pacemaker implantation. The section frames the coding context for diagnosis and procedure assignment in a clinical encounter.
