Catheter Ablation to Treat Atrial Fibrillation
A patient was seen for catheter ablation due to symptomatic atrial fibrillation. A diagnostic intracardiac electrophysiology study (EPS) with mapping and isolation of the four pulmonary veins was performed. Lesions were delivered by radiofrequency to the carina and anterior to the left superior pulmonary vein. The left inferior pulmonary vein, right superior and right inferior pulmonary veins were then isolated with entrance and exit blocks. Please advise us on how to code this procedure since it is the area around the pulmonary vein that is ablated, and not the actual pulmonary vein. ...

Article Overview
This premium coding article addresses a catheter ablation case for symptomatic atrial fibrillation and discusses how the procedure is classified in ICD-10-PCS when treatment is directed at the area surrounding a body part rather than the body part itself. It is intended for coding professionals who need to understand the scope of the procedure, the anatomical focus described, and the code selection context used in this scenario.
Why This Topic Matters
Accurate procedure coding depends on identifying the correct body part targeted by the intervention, especially in electrophysiology cases where the treated area may differ from the named structure. This article helps readers understand the documentation context for catheter ablation involving the pulmonary veins and how that affects ICD-10-PCS assignment.
