Cell Suspension Epithelial Autograft

Cell Suspension is a method by which autologous cells are harvested, prepared and applied to the wound bed of acute thermal burns to promote wound healing and reconstruction. In the RECELL® technique, a thin split-thickness skin sample is obtained from a donor site. The skin sample is incubated in an enzyme solution that allows a mixed population of cells that include keratinocytes, fibroblasts and melanocytes to be disaggregated and scraped away from the epidermis and dermis of the skin sample. The cells are collected and drawn into a syringe of buffer solution for cell suspension. The cell suspension produces...

Article Overview

This article covers a cell suspension epithelial autograft approach used in the treatment of acute thermal burns and discusses how the procedure is represented in ICD-10-PCS. It is relevant for coding professionals, clinical documentation teams, and reimbursement staff who need a high-level understanding of the method, the procedure context, and the code-set framework involved.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate reporting of burn-related autologous skin replacement procedures depends on understanding the procedure concept and the ICD-10-PCS structure used to classify it. This article helps readers identify the broader coding context without relying on the full premium explanation.

Article Sections

  1. Overview of Cell Suspension Epithelial Autograft

Introduces the cell suspension method and describes its use in wound care for acute thermal burns. The section provides the general clinical context for the procedure.

  2. RECELL Technique and Cell Preparation

Summarizes the preparation of a harvested skin sample into a cell suspension and the formation of a regenerative epidermal suspension. The section outlines the general process at a high level.

  3. ICD-10-PCS Table 0HR Classification

Explains the procedure classification framework for autologous skin replacement in the ICD-10-PCS system. The section identifies the table structure and the relevant qualifier concept.

  4. Body Part, Approach, Device, and Qualifier Values

Lists the available body-part and related value options associated with the procedure table. The section presents the coding framework elements without detailed selection guidance.
