AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2010 Issue 4; VOLUMES 1 & 2 NEW/REVISED CODES
Cognitive Deficits Related to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Neurological Conditions
Effective October 1, 2010, new codes have been created to identify cognitive deficits related to a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and neurological conditions. These codes are used to describe cognitive impairments such as problems with memory, concentration, attention, communication, and executive function. They are intended to be used as supplementary codes when the cause of the deficit is known as well as before a more specific diagnosis is made. In addition, these codes may be used as supplementary codes when the cause of the deficit is known because the deficit is not inherent to the condition. These codes are...

Article Overview
This article reviews a set of new ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes added to identify cognitive deficits associated with traumatic brain injury and related neurological conditions. It is intended for coding professionals who need to understand the scope of the new cognitive deficit categories, the chapter placement within ICD-9-CM, related exclusions, and a brief coding example involving an outpatient scenario.
Why This Topic Matters
These diagnosis categories affect how cognitive impairment associated with neurologic injury is documented and reported in coding workflows. Understanding the scope of the new codes helps coders and compliance teams recognize when the article’s guidance is relevant to outpatient follow-up and related documentation.
Article Sections
-
Overview of the new cognitive deficit codes
Introduces the purpose and effective date of the newly created diagnosis codes and describes the types of cognitive impairments they are intended to capture.
-
ICD-9-CM chapter placement and related exclusions
Identifies where the codes are located in ICD-9-CM and summarizes the surrounding classification context, including excluded related conditions.
-
New subcategory 799.5 signs and symptoms involving cognition
Lists the new cognition-related diagnosis options within the subcategory and shows how they are grouped for reporting.
-
Coding example for outpatient follow-up
Presents a brief scenario involving ongoing care after traumatic brain injury and shows the article’s sample coding approach.
