Cranial Cavity Catheter and Liquid Brachytherapy

Effective October 1, 2005, new codes 01.26, Insertion of catheter into cranial cavity; 01.27, Removal of catheter from cranial cavity; and 92.20, Infusion of liquid brachytherapy radioisotope, have been created to identify the insertion and removal of intracranial catheters and the delivery of liquid radioisotopes. The GliaSite® Radiation Therapy System (RTS) is used to deliver liquid brachytherapy radioisotope directly to malignant brain tumors within the cavity created by the surgical removal of the tumor. The balloon catheter is implanted temporarily inside the cavity, at the same time of surgical resection of the malignancy. The patient is...

Article Overview

This article explains a coding update tied to intracranial catheter placement, catheter removal, and liquid brachytherapy infusion, along with a clinical scenario involving treatment of a malignant brain tumor. It is relevant to hospital coders, inpatient coding staff, and others who need to understand how the topic is classified across ICD-9-CM procedure and diagnosis coding. The discussion also touches on related excluded or neighboring procedure categories and a sample case used to illustrate the coding context.

Why This Topic Matters

These topics affect how brain tumor surgery and subsequent intracavitary radiation treatment are represented in coding systems, especially when care is staged across separate admissions. Understanding the article helps readers recognize the procedure categories and diagnosis context involved in this specialized treatment pathway.

Article Sections

  1. Coding update and clinical background

Introduces the procedure update and describes the general clinical setting for catheter-based liquid brachytherapy in the cranial cavity.

  2. Related procedure categories and exclusions

Summarizes nearby procedure categories and the way the article frames their relationship to the liquid brachytherapy topic.

  3. Clinical example and coding question

Presents a sample inpatient scenario involving brain tumor surgery, later therapy, and catheter removal, followed by a coding question.
