Dilation of bladder neck contracture/stenosis with endoscopic balloon

A patient with prior history of radical prostatectomy presented with recurrent bladder neck contracture/stenosis. Under general anesthesia the patient was placed in low lithotomy position pressed and draped in the usual sterile fashion. A retrograde urethrogram was performed to delineate the anatomy. Next, a 22-French rigid cystoscope was inserted into the urethra and advanced to the level of the stenosis. A wire was placed across the stenosis into the bladder. It was unable to be adequately dilated with sounds. Next, the 30-French Optilume® balloon was advanced across the stenosis and inflated to its recommended maximum pressure, it was held there for 5 minutes and then deflated. A 16-French council catheter was then placed over the wired into the bladder. He was then extubated and transported to the recovery room in stable condition. How would the cystoscopy with endoscopic balloon dilation of bladder neck contracture/stenosis be coded? ...

Article Overview

This premium article reviews a urologic operative scenario involving cystoscopic evaluation, wire passage, and balloon dilation of a bladder neck contracture or stenosis. It is intended for coding professionals, billers, auditors, and urology staff who need to understand how this type of endoscopic intervention is represented in CPT and how the operative details affect code selection. The content centers on the procedure context, anatomy, and coding approach rather than broader clinical management.

Why This Topic Matters

Bladder neck contracture/stenosis procedures can be coded differently depending on the operative approach and the documented endoscopic steps. Accurate code selection supports compliant billing and helps distinguish this service from other cystoscopic or dilation procedures.

What You Will Learn

  • How the operative scenario is structured from a coding perspective
  • Which CPT area is relevant to endoscopic bladder neck dilation procedures
  • What documentation elements are present in the case narrative
  • How a cystoscopic balloon dilation case is framed for coding review

Who Should Read This
