AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS - 2015 Issue 4; New/Revised ICD-10-PCS Codes
Drug-Coated Balloon Angioplasty in Peripheral Vessels
Effective October 1, 2015, new ICD-10-PCS codes have been created to identify the use of drug-coated balloons in peripheral angioplasty in order to distinguish this new technology from traditional angioplasty. The use of drug-coated balloons in angioplasty is now identified by the qualifier value “1 Drug-Coated Balloon.” This new qualifier value has been added to table 047 Dilation of Lower Arteries, and is available for all vessels in the table. For coding purposes, drug-coated balloons are not considered devices, because they are not left in the body after the procedure. The use of drug-coated balloons in interventional...

Article Overview
This article covers an ICD-10-PCS update for peripheral angioplasty involving drug-coated balloons, with emphasis on lower-extremity vessel procedures and the code changes introduced for this technology. It is relevant for inpatient coders, CDI teams, vascular surgery documentation staff, and reimbursement professionals who need to recognize the procedure category, understand the scope of the coding update, and see which lower-artery procedures are included. The article also presents a procedural example and identifies the selected ICD-10-PCS code for that scenario.
Why This Topic Matters
Drug-coated balloon angioplasty is a distinct peripheral vascular technology, and the article shows how ICD-10-PCS was updated to capture it accurately. Correct classification affects inpatient procedure reporting and documentation consistency for lower-extremity interventions.
