Duration of Mechanical Ventilation at Long Term Care Hospital
The Central Office has received several questions about ventilator dependent patients admitted to a long term care hospital for weaning from mechanical ventilation, published in Coding Clinic Fourth Quarter 2003, pages 103-104. Code 96.72, Continuous mechanical ventilation for 96 consecutive hours or more, was inadvertently omitted from the answer. The duration of mechanical ventilation should be coded and is counted starting from the time of admission to the long term care hospital. This advice is consistent with that previously published in Coding Clinic, Second Quarter 1992, pages 13-14. ...
