Dysmetabolic Syndrome X
Dysmetabolic Syndrome X refers to a cluster of related disorders, which share an underlying metabolic cause (insulin resistance without elevated blood sugar level, dyslipidemia, obesity and blood pressure elevation). Syndrome X is considered to be a major risk factor for coronary artery disease and hypertension. Effective October 1, 2001, a new code has been created to uniquely identify this syndrome at the request of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. Please note that Dysmetabolic Syndrome X should not be confused with Cardiac Syndrome X, which is indexed to code 413.9, Other and unspecified angina pectoris. ...

Article Overview
This article reviews Dysmetabolic Syndrome X as a metabolic condition associated with broader cardiometabolic risk and notes its recognition in coding guidance effective October 1, 2001. It is relevant to coders and clinicians working in endocrinology, primary care, and related specialties who need to understand the general topic, the distinction from Cardiac Syndrome X, and the type of diagnostic coding context addressed in the article.
Why This Topic Matters
The topic matters because the syndrome is described as a recognized diagnostic entity with implications for accurate medical record indexing and diagnosis coding. The article also highlights the importance of distinguishing it from a similarly named cardiac condition in documentation and code lookup workflows.
