Endometrial Hyperplasia

Effective October 1, 2004, code 621.3, has been expanded to allow the reporting of endometrial hyperplasia (621.30), simple endometrial hyperplasia without atypia (621.31), complex endometrial hyperplasia without atypia (621.32), and endometrial hyperplasia with atypia (621.33). Endometrial hyperplasia is an abnormal thickening of the lining of the uterus. A diagnosis is made based on a tissue sampling. This condition may be classified as simple, complex, or atypical. Article Overview

This article covers a coding update for endometrial hyperplasia in ICD-9-CM, including the expansion of the parent category and the addition of more specific diagnosis codes. It also gives a general clinical overview of endometrial hyperplasia, its broad classification types, and why classification matters for understanding associated risk and related management. The article is relevant to coders, billers, and clinical documentation staff working with gynecology diagnoses and historical ICD-9-CM updates.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate diagnosis specificity affects code selection, documentation quality, and the ability to distinguish among broad clinical categories within gynecology-related claims. The article is especially useful for understanding a historical coding revision and the corresponding level of detail expected in documentation.

Article Sections

  1. Clinical Overview

Provides a general explanation of endometrial hyperplasia and describes broad clinical classification concepts. It also notes the relevance of tissue sampling and the condition’s general relationship to risk stratification.

  2. Simple and Complex Hyperplasia

Summarizes broad clinical context for non-atypical forms of the condition and mentions related management considerations. It also references external-cause reporting in a general way.

  3. Atypical Hyperplasia

Describes the atypical form of the condition and its general significance in relation to cancer risk. It provides high-level context about why this category is clinically important.

  4. ICD-9-CM Code Updates

Outlines the affected uterus disorder category and the revision that expanded the parent code into more specific diagnosis codes. The section identifies the scope of the coding update without giving code-selection instructions.
