Endovascular Bioactive Coil

Two new codes have been created to identify endovascular embolization or occlusion of head or neck vessels using bare metal coils (39.75) and bioactive coils (39.76). Prior to this change, these procedures were indexed to code 39.72, Endovascular repair or occlusion of head and neck vessels, however this code does not differentiate between the use of bare platinum coils (BPCs) and more advanced coils that include biodegradable polymers. Currently, there are two classes of coils: bare platinum coils (BPCs) and bioactive coils. BPCs are primarily bare metal, while bioactive coils include a biologically active agent that...

Article Overview

This article reviews a coding change involving endovascular embolization or occlusion of head and neck vessels and explains the general clinical and coding context behind separating bare metal coils from bioactive coils. It is relevant to coders, CDI staff, and clinicians working with neurovascular and aneurysm procedures, especially when reviewing updated procedure classification for head and neck vessel interventions.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate procedure reporting depends on recognizing the coding distinction introduced for different coil technologies used in head and neck vessel embolization or occlusion. The article helps readers understand the scope of the update and the broader clinical context for these procedures.

Article Sections

  1. Overview of the coding change

Introduces the updated procedure classification for head and neck vessel embolization or occlusion and the reason the change was made.

  2. Coil types and clinical background

Describes the general categories of coil technology discussed in the article and the clinical context for their use in neurovascular procedures.

  3. Bioactive coil design and materials

Summarizes the bioactive coil design concept and the material characteristics discussed in relation to thrombosis and occlusion.

  4. Code assignment example

Presents a sample clinical scenario involving aneurysm treatment and the corresponding coding discussion.
