Endovascular Implant in Thoracic Aorta

Effective October 1, 2005, a new code 39.73, Endovascular implantation of graft in thoracic aorta, has been created to report endovascular repair of thoracic aorta. Conventional repair of aneurysms of the descending thoracicaorta traditionally involved thoracotomy and graft interposition. This type of surgery carried a significant risk for agedpatients and those with previous operations, obesity, respiratoryinsufficiency, or other comorbidities. Endovascular stent-graft repair is an alternative minimally invasive treatment for patients with thoracic aortic defects either caused by aneurysm, trauma, or a complication of previous surgery. The endoprosthesis is a conduit constructed of ultra-thin graft material with an integrated...

Article Overview

This article covers a coding change effective October 1, 2005 involving endovascular repair of the thoracic aorta. It discusses the clinical context for thoracic aortic endograft repair, the general procedure approach, and related classification notes and exclusions. It is relevant for coders, billers, and clinicians working with vascular surgery and hospital coding updates.

Why This Topic Matters

Thoracic aortic endovascular repair can be clinically and operationally important, and accurate code assignment depends on understanding the scope of the update and nearby related code references. The article helps readers recognize how the topic fits into procedure coding and where related exclusions apply.

Article Sections

  1. Coding update and clinical context

Introduces the coding change and describes the broader clinical setting for endovascular repair of the thoracic aorta. The section also summarizes the procedure at a high level and the types of thoracic aortic defects involved.

  2. New code and related terminology

Presents the newly added procedure code and several synonymous or closely related terms used to describe the service. It also notes the general exclusion framework associated with nearby vascular repair coding.
