Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders

Effective October 1, 2008, subcategories 530.1, Esophagitis, 535, Gastritis and duodenitis and category 558, Other and unspecified noninfectious gastroenteritis and colitis, have been expanded to create separate codes to identify eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs). Eosinophilic esophagitis (530.13) is an inflammatory condition in which the wall of the esophagus to become filled with large numbers of eosinophils. Eosinophils are white blood cells generated in the bone marrow that actively promote inflammation. The most common cause of esophagitis is acid reflux which causes heartburn.
