Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders

Effective October 1, 2008, subcategories 530.1, Esophagitis, 535, Gastritis and duodenitis and category 558, Other and unspecified noninfectious gastroenteritis and colitis, have been expanded to create separate codes to identify eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs). Eosinophilic esophagitis (530.13) is an inflammatory condition in which the wall of the esophagus to become filled with large numbers of eosinophils. Eosinophils are white blood cells generated in the bone marrow that actively promote inflammation. The most common cause of esophagitis is acid reflux which causes heartburn. Difficulty swallowing solid food is a major symptom of eosinophilic esophagitis among adults. In children...

Article Overview

This article explains the coding update that created separate ICD-9-CM codes for eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders and places those changes in the context of the related digestive system disease categories. It is useful for coding professionals, auditors, and clinical documentation teams who need to understand how these disorders are organized in the classification system and what types of guidance accompany the update.

Why This Topic Matters

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders can affect multiple parts of the digestive tract and may be documented using terminology that overlaps with other gastrointestinal conditions. Understanding the classification changes helps support accurate code selection, documentation review, and awareness of how these disorders are grouped within the affected ICD-9-CM categories.

Article Sections

  1. Coding update for eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders

Introduces the ICD-9-CM expansion effective October 1, 2008 and explains that new codes were created within multiple digestive disease categories. This section frames the article around the classification changes for eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders.

  2. Clinical overview of eosinophilic esophagitis, gastritis, gastroenteritis, and colitis

Summarizes the major eosinophilic conditions affecting the esophagus, stomach, and lower gastrointestinal tract. It gives broad clinical context and describes general symptom patterns and affected anatomy.

  3. ICD-9-CM category and code changes

Lists the affected digestive system categories and the new subcategories and codes introduced for eosinophilic conditions. The section also shows how the update relates to existing headings within the ICD-9-CM structure.

  4. Coding question and answer

Presents a sample documentation scenario involving eosinophilic allergic gastroenteritis and colitis. The discussion addresses the general coding approach described in the article for that scenario.
