Excision of Ulceration of Arteriovenous Fistula
This same patient was found to have an ulcerated area of the arteriovenous (AV) fistula at the cannulation site, extending through the skin to the vessel wall into the cephalic vein portion of the fistula. The surgeon noted that this was the reason for the bleeding. An elliptical incision was made around this abnormal tissue, extending through both the skin and the vascular wall. The defect was then reapproximated in layers and the vascular wall was reapproximated with suture material. What is the correct root operation for this procedure, Excision, Repair, or Revision? ...

Article Overview
This article explains a procedure-coding scenario involving an ulcerated area of an arteriovenous fistula at the cannulation site and discusses how the operation is characterized in ICD-10-PCS. It is aimed at coding professionals who need to understand how vascular fistula procedures are reported and how associated repair steps are treated at a high level. The article provides a short clinical vignette, identifies the relevant ICD-10-PCS framework, and presents the assigned procedure code.
Why This Topic Matters
