Expansion of Category 079, Virus and Chlamydial Infections

Human Papilloma Virus Effective October 1,1993, a new code, 079.4, Human papilloma virus, has been created. Human Papilloma Viruses (HPV) selectively infect the epithelium of skin or mucous membranes. These infections may be asymptomatic, produce warts, or be associated with a variety of both benign and malignant neoplasms. There are over 50 identified types of HPV. Article Overview

This premium coding article reviews changes to ICD-9-CM classification related to virus and chlamydial infections. It focuses on the addition of a new diagnosis code for human papilloma virus, the use of a secondary code for conditions associated with HIV II and other retrovirus-related illnesses, and a fifth-digit expansion within viral warts. The material is intended for coders and coding professionals who need to understand the scope of the update and the types of clinical scenarios affected.

Why This Topic Matters

These updates affect how infectious and virus-related diagnoses are classified in ICD-9-CM, which can influence code selection, reporting consistency, and data specificity for affected patients and conditions.

Article Sections

  1. Human Papilloma Virus

Discusses the classification update for human papilloma virus and the broad clinical contexts associated with this infection category.

  2. Retroviruses

Reviews the need for secondary identification of certain retrovirus-related conditions and the broader context of HIV-related classification.

  3. Viral Warts

Covers the coding update related to viral warts and the addition of a more specific fifth-digit category for a genital wart presentation.
