Extracranial-Intracranial (EC-IC) Vascular Bypass 39.28

Extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) arterial bypass consists of a microsurgical end-to-side anastomosis of the superficial temporal or occipital artery to a cortical branch of the middle cerebral artery. It was first performed in 1967 and was generally used for three atherosclerotic conditions: stenosis or occlusion of the inaccessible portion of the internal carotid artery stenosis or Occlusion of the middle cerebral artery longstanding complete occlusion of the internal carotid artery considered to be inoperable by carotid endarterectomy. The EC-IC bypass is also used for treatment of conditions other than atherosclerosis such as skull based tumors involving the internal or middle carotid...

Article Overview

This article covers extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) vascular bypass, including its general surgical concept, the conditions historically associated with its use, and the rationale for assigning a separate procedure code. It is relevant to coding professionals, auditors, and clinicians who need to understand how this bypass procedure is categorized and tracked in coding systems.

Why This Topic Matters

Understanding how EC-IC bypass is represented in coding helps support accurate procedure reporting, longitudinal tracking, and review of how the operation is used across different clinical situations.

What You Will Learn

  • What EC-IC vascular bypass refers to in broad terms
  • Which broad clinical contexts have been associated with the procedure
  • Why a separate code was created to track the procedure
  • How the article frames the procedure within historical and coding context
