AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2008 Issue 4; VOLUMES 1 AND 2 NEW/REVISED CODES
Flow Reserve and Intravascular Pressure Measurement
Effective October 1, 2008, new codes have been created to identify fractional flow reserve (FFR) in coronary vessels and intravascular pressure measurement of intra-aneurysm sac and noncoronary vessels. Prior to this change, intracoronary pressure measurement was assigned to code 89.69, Monitoring of coronary blood flow. The inclusion term listed under code 89.69, “Coronary blood flow monitoring by coincidence counting technique,†did not fully capture the use of FFR. Additionally, this code did not capture the use of intravascular pressure measurement outside of the heart. In the past, intravascular pressure measurement might...

Article Overview
This article reviews coding changes related to flow reserve and intravascular pressure measurement, including coronary, intrathoracic, peripheral, and other vessel categories, as well as pressure monitoring in aneurysm repair. It is intended for coding professionals who need to understand the scope of the revised procedure coding options and the general areas they cover. The article also addresses the context for these updates and the types of procedures included in the guidance.
Why This Topic Matters
These coding updates affect how pressure-based vascular assessment procedures are identified in procedural coding workflows. Accurate understanding of the applicable code set and vessel category is important for consistent reporting and code selection.
Article Sections
-
Background on pressure-based vascular assessment
Introduces the clinical and coding context for pressure-based assessment techniques and why new procedure codes were added.
-
New codes for aneurysm sac and vascular pressure measurement
Summarizes the newly introduced procedure code categories for aneurysm sac monitoring and intravascular pressure measurement across vessel groups.
