Genetic Susceptibility to Disease

Effective October 1, 2004, a new category (V84) has been created to report genetic susceptibility to disease. With modern advances in gene research and molecular biology, it is now possible to identify if a patient has a genetic susceptibility to certain types of diseases. Genetic susceptibility biomarkers identify preexisting inherited genetic defects that increase the risk of a disease, such as malignant neoplasm. Inheritance of a defective gene is a factor in less than 5% of people who develop cancer. Scientists at the National Cancer Institute have been conducting molecular research to identify the sources and types of gene...

Article Overview

This article is a coding update on the ICD-9-CM category created to report genetic susceptibility to disease. It explains the general clinical context for genetic markers, identifies the new subcategory structure for malignant neoplasm susceptibility, and discusses how the topic relates to family history and personal history reporting. It is aimed at medical coders, coding educators, and compliance staff who need to recognize when this diagnosis family is relevant and how the new classification is organized.

Why This Topic Matters

Genetic susceptibility concepts can affect diagnosis reporting, code sequencing, and documentation review when family history or current/past disease context is also present. Understanding the new category helps coders and auditors recognize the proper reporting framework for these genetics-related diagnoses.

Article Sections

  1. Overview of genetic susceptibility to disease

Introduces the topic of inherited risk markers and places the coding update in a broader clinical and research context. The section frames why the new diagnosis category was added.

  2. New category V84 and subcategory structure

Summarizes the new diagnosis family and its organization into more specific subcategories and codes. It also notes related references to family history and personal history reporting.

  3. Clinical example

Presents a sample case involving prophylactic breast surgery and associated diagnosis reporting. The example illustrates how the scenario is discussed in the article without reproducing the full coding rationale.
