Article Overview
This article explains a coding update for headache and migraine classification that became effective October 1, 2008. It is aimed at coders and clinicians who need to understand how the headache-related categories were reorganized, how migraine specificity was expanded, and how related exclusions and subclassification changes were applied within ICD-9-CM. The content also includes a clinical scenario illustrating the broader topic of headache and migraine coding in the context of another diagnosis.
Why This Topic Matters
Headache and migraine documentation can be nonspecific, and the article highlights changes intended to improve classification accuracy and consistency. It helps readers recognize when revised categories, subcategories, and related diagnosis groupings are involved in medical record coding.
