Effective October 1, 2008, code 599.7, Hematuria, has been expanded to create unique codes to separately identify gross hematuria (599.71) and microscopic hematuria (599.72), and unspecified hematuria (599.70). Gross (or macroscopic) hematuria is visible to the naked eye. Microscopic hematuria refers to blood present in the urine that can only be seen under a microscope. Whether blood is visible only under a microscope or present in amounts sufficient enough to be seen with the naked eye, it is a sign that something is causing abnormal bleeding in the genitourinary tract.
