Hip Replacement Bearing Surfaces

In October 2005, new codes (00.74-00.76) were created to identify different types of bearing surface materials used in hip prosthetic implants such as metal-on-polyethylene, metal-on-metal, and ceramic-on-ceramic. Effective October 1, 2006, code 00.77, Hip replacement bearing surface, ceramic-on-polyethylene, has been created to capture information on a new bearing surface material being used. As with the previously created hip replacement bearing surface codes, code 00.77 should be assigned as an additional procedure, if the specific type of bearing surface is known. Code 00.77 may be used with hip replacement procedures (81.51 and 81.52)...

Article Overview

This article covers updates to hip replacement bearing surface coding and how the related procedure information is represented in coding systems used for orthopedic surgery. It is relevant to coders, billers, and reimbursement staff working with hip arthroplasty and revision procedures, especially when tracking changes introduced in 2005 and 2006.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate representation of hip implant bearing surface information supports complete procedure reporting and helps maintain consistency when newer coding options are introduced. The article matters for anyone coding hip replacement and revision cases who needs to understand the scope of the bearing-surface updates.

Article Sections

  1. Bearing surface code updates

Describes the introduction of new hip replacement bearing surface codes and the later addition of another option tied to implant material tracking.

  2. Procedure code associations

Summarizes the broader hip replacement and revision procedure codes referenced in connection with the bearing surface reporting topic.
