Hyperparathyroidism

Effective October 1, 2004, code 252.0, Hyperparathyroidism, has been expanded to separately identify unspecified hyperparathyroidism (252.00), primary hyperparathyroidism (252.01), secondary hyperparathyroidism, nonrenal (252.02), and other hyperparathyroidism (252.08). The new codes will now allow differentiation between the different types of hyperparathyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism is a disease characterized by the excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by the parathyroid glands. PTH is a substance that helps maintain the correct balance of calcium and phosphorous in the body. PTH regulates release of calcium from the bone, absorption of calcium in the intestine, and excretion of calcium in the...

Article Overview

This article covers hyperparathyroidism as a clinical topic and reviews how related diagnosis categories were updated to distinguish among different forms of the condition. It is useful for coders, CDI professionals, and clinicians who need to understand the general structure of the coding changes, the related renal-function category, and the broader clinical context discussed in the article.

Why This Topic Matters

The article helps readers understand how evolving diagnosis categories separate different hyperparathyroidism presentations and related renal-origin conditions. That matters for accurate record classification, consistent communication across specialties, and understanding when related diagnosis groupings are discussed together.

Article Sections

  1. Clinical overview of hyperparathyroidism

Provides a general explanation of the condition and the role of parathyroid hormone in calcium balance. It also summarizes the broad clinical context for the disorder.

  2. Primary, secondary, and tertiary forms

Reviews the major clinical forms discussed in the article and distinguishes them at a high level. The section also notes how these forms relate to underlying causes and patient populations.

  3. ICD-9-CM parathyroid and renal-function code updates

Summarizes the diagnosis-code revisions described in the article, including the parathyroid disorder category and the related renal-function disorder category. It presents the structure of the updated classification without detailing selection guidance.

  4. Coding scenario involving malabsorption-related secondary hyperparathyroidism

Presents a brief admission scenario showing how the article connects a clinical situation with diagnosis-category discussion. The section focuses on the broader coding context and related diagnosis assignment issues.
