Implantable Hemodynamic Monitoring System

Effective October 1, 2011, a new procedure code (38.26) has been created to identify the insertion of an implantable pressure sensor without lead for intracardiac or great vessel hemodynamic monitoring. This is a new hemodynamic monitoring system in which one component of the system is implantable; only the sensor is implanted in a great vessel. An external monitor is used to communicate wirelessly with the sensor. These devices are used to treat heart failure. During this procedure, the delivery system is inserted over a guidewire and advanced to the selected pulmonary artery branch. The sensor/monitor is implanted and...

Article Overview

This article covers a newly created procedure code for implantable hemodynamic monitoring, with emphasis on how the system is structured, the setting in which it is used, and the coding distinctions associated with similar monitoring technologies. It is relevant to hospital coders, cardiology coding teams, and revenue cycle staff who work with heart failure-related procedures and device implantation reporting. The article also notes the effective date and identifies related code families that are excluded or otherwise distinguished from the new code.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate reporting of implantable hemodynamic monitoring procedures depends on distinguishing this device from other circulatory and hemodynamic monitoring services. The article helps readers recognize the applicable procedure category and understand which nearby code families are not the same service.

Article Sections

  1. Overview and effective date

Introduces the procedure category, the implementation timeframe, and the general clinical purpose of the monitoring system.

  2. System description and procedure context

Describes the device configuration, implantation workflow, and the general monitoring process associated with the system.

  3. New code and notes

Presents the newly identified procedure code and related note language about the device structure and monitoring arrangement.

  4. Excludes

Lists related circulatory and hemodynamic monitoring code families and the nearby procedure category that are not included in this new code.
