Article Overview

This article reviews a new procedure code introduced in October 2005 for implantation of an interspinous process decompression device. It gives a general overview of the clinical problem being addressed, the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, and the publication context in which the code was added. The piece is useful for coders, clinical documentation staff, and reimbursement professionals who need to understand the scope of the new code and its relationship to other spine procedures.

Why This Topic Matters

When a new code is introduced, coding and billing workflows may need to be updated to reflect the revised procedure taxonomy. This article helps readers identify the code’s general clinical setting and the broader category of excluded spine procedures.

What You Will Learn

  • The clinical context for a procedure involving the lumbar spine
  • The general characteristics of a minimally invasive implant-based spine procedure
  • The publication and implementation context for a newly created code
  • The relationship between the new code and excluded spine procedure categories
