Inahara Pruitt Shunt and Carotid Endarterectomy
An Inahara Pruitt shunt was used during left carotid endarterectomy with pericardial patch angioplasty. An arteriotomy was made on the common carotid and extended on to the internal carotid. There was some back bleeding from the internal carotid, but it was not adequate, so the shunt was placed. The shunt was removed following endarterectomy with patch angioplasty, the vessels were flushed and blood flow was restored. Is the shunt inherent to the procedure? If not, what is the appropriate code assignment for the Inahara Pruitt shunt? ...

Article Overview
This article discusses coding considerations for carotid endarterectomy when an Inahara Pruitt shunt is used during the procedure. It is aimed at coders and coding professionals who need to understand how the procedure is represented in medical coding guidance and whether separate assignment is warranted for the shunt or related surgical components.
Why This Topic Matters
Procedures involving vascular shunts and carotid endarterectomy can raise questions about what is bundled versus separately coded. Understanding the article helps support accurate procedure coding and avoid unnecessary separate code assignment.
What You Will Learn
- How the article frames coding for carotid endarterectomy performed with shunt assistance.
- What general coding issue is being addressed for the shunt used during the procedure.
- How the article relates patch angioplasty to the broader procedure coding discussion.
- The type of coding guidance provided for a vascular surgery scenario.
