Infant and Wound Botulism

Effective October 1, 2007, two new codes 040.41, Infant botulism, and 040.42, Wound botulism, have been created to report both infant and wound botulism, respectively. Botulism is a poisoning caused by the neurotoxin Clostridium botulinum. C. Botulinum is an anaerobic, gram positive bacillus with several distinct neurotoxins. There are three types of botulism: food-borne, wound and infant botulism. Currently, code 005.1, Botulism food poisoning, is the only code for botulism.
