Effective October 1, 2004, a new code has been created for the infusion of a vasopressor agent. Prior to this change, this procedure was assigned to code 99.29, Injection or infusion of other therapeutic or prophylactic substance. Code 99.29 does not adequately describe the use of a vasopressor drug or its clinical implications. Vasopressors are used in the treatment of shock, which is a state of inadequate tissue perfusion due to abnormally low systemic blood pressure.
