Intracardiac Hemodynamic Monitoring

Effective October 1, 2006, new codes have been created for the implantation or replacement of intracardiac hemodynamic monitoring. Intracardiac hemodynamic monitoring systems have implanted components and are used to continually sense and record physiologic heart measurements in patients with severe heart failure. The implanted hemodynamic monitoring system requires insertion or implantation of two key components: a lead tipped with a pressure sensor (00.56) and a monitor device (00.57). The sensor is inserted transvenously into the heart chamber and inserted within the right ventricle at the right ventricular ouflow tract, unlike pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator leads which...

Article Overview

This article covers coding updates for intracardiac hemodynamic monitoring, a device-based approach used in patients with severe heart failure. It explains the general clinical setup, the newly created codes, related component pairing, and an exclusion for other monitoring services. The content is relevant to medical coders, CDI staff, and billing professionals working with cardiovascular procedures and ICD-9-CM procedure coding updates.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate identification of the applicable procedure codes affects correct reporting of device implantation or replacement services involving intracardiac hemodynamic monitoring. The article also helps readers distinguish this service from other monitored cardiovascular procedures.

  • What prompted the coding update and when it took effect
  • Which procedure codes were introduced for the related implantation or replacement services
  • How the article frames the relationship between the monitoring components and associated procedures
  • What category of other monitoring services is excluded from this topic
