Intradiscal ElectroThermal Therapy (IDET)
Intradiscal ElectroThermal Therapy (IDET) is a new minimally invasive treatment modality for patients with discogenic back pain. IDET is used primarily to treat patients with bulging of the disc and degenerative herniations of the disc. Joints, tendons, ligaments, and disc walls are made of collagen. Disc collagen reacts to temperatures of 65 degrees centigrade or greater. IDET enables treatment of the disc without actually destroying tissue and minimizes risks associated with open spinal surgery. IDET is accomplished by inserting a catheter into the disc. Performed under mild sedation with local anesthesia, the catheter is positioned under fluoroscopic guidance. The...

Article Overview
This article reviews intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET) for discogenic back pain, describing the general procedure, the anatomy involved, and the clinical setting in which it is performed. It also discusses a coding question related to an IDET annuloplasty case and compares alternative coding pathways in the context of the procedure. The content is relevant to coders, billing staff, auditors, and clinicians working with spine-related procedures and coding classification.
Why This Topic Matters
IDE T is a niche spine procedure that can be miscoded if the operative target is misunderstood. The article helps readers distinguish the broad procedural category being discussed and understand the type of coding issue raised by the scenario.
