Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy

Effective October 1, 2009, a new subcategory (17.6) has been created to report laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) under guidance. Four new procedure codes have been created to uniquely report LITT of different sites. The use of LITT under guidance will help to eliminate or reduce the size of a tumor. Thermal therapy can be used to destroy malignancies involving the brain, breast, liver, prostate and other organs. There are many forms of energy sources such as laser, microwave, radiofrequency, etc. The heat source may be extracorporeal (outside the body), extrastitial (outside the tumor) or interstitial (inside the...

Article Overview

This article covers the addition of new procedure coding for laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) under guidance, including the main site-based code categories and the clinical context in which the therapy is used. It is relevant to coders, billers, and clinicians working with neurosurgery, oncology, and MRI-guided procedures because it helps clarify the scope of the new coding structure and how the service is represented in a sample case.

Why This Topic Matters

LITT is a specialized procedure that can involve multiple anatomic sites and imaging guidance, so accurate code recognition is important for correct reporting and claim handling. The article helps readers understand the overall coding framework associated with this therapy and its site-specific organization.

Article Sections

  1. Overview of laser interstitial thermal therapy

Introduces the therapy, the general clinical context in which it is used, and the broad concept of treating lesions under guidance. It also describes the types of sites where the procedure may be applied.

  2. New subcategory 17.6 and site-based procedure codes

Summarizes the coding structure created for LITT under guidance and the organization of the related site-specific procedure categories. It includes the general framework for MRI-guided reporting and the excluded site relationships mentioned in the source.

  3. Clinical example and coding question

Presents a sample case involving MRI-guided treatment of a brain lesion and asks for the appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes. The example is used to illustrate how the coding topic applies in practice.
